What the research tells us

What the evidence says

Each summary sticks to what the cited source studied and found.

CKD dietary pattern

How strong the evidence is
Guideline-supported
What kind of study it is
Clinical practice guideline

What the study found

KDIGO advises people with CKD to consume a healthy, diverse diet with proportionally more plant-based foods and fewer ultraprocessed foods.

Limitations

  • Individual dietary requirements vary by CKD severity and comorbidities.
  • Sodium, potassium, phosphorus and protein recommendations may require individualization by a renal dietitian or qualified clinician.
  • Do not imply that a generic plant-based diet treats or reverses CKD.

What this says about long-term health

Do not infer beyond the guideline recommendation.

Sodium intake in CKD

How strong the evidence is
Moderate / guideline-supported
What kind of study it is
Clinical practice guideline informed by randomized trials

What the study found

KDIGO suggests sodium intake below 2 g/day in people with CKD. Trials cited by the guideline show dietary sodium reduction can lower blood pressure and albuminuria in CKD.

Limitations

  • Long-term trials have not established that sodium restriction itself reduces CKD progression or cardiovascular events.
  • Sodium restriction is not appropriate for every CKD presentation, including some sodium-wasting disorders.

What this says about long-term health

This study did not report a long-term health outcome.
