What the research tells us

What the evidence says

Each summary sticks to what the cited source studied and found.

Mediterranean diet vs Specific Carbohydrate Diet

How strong the evidence is
Moderate
What kind of study it is
Randomized controlled comparative-effectiveness trial

What the study found

In a randomized trial of 191 adults with mild-to-moderate Crohn’s disease symptoms, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet was not superior to a Mediterranean diet for symptomatic remission, fecal calprotectin response, or CRP response after six weeks.

Limitations

  • Symptomatic remission does not establish mucosal healing or cure.
  • CRP response was uncommon.
  • Do not claim the Mediterranean diet induces remission in all patients.
  • Do not imply diet replaces standard Crohn’s disease medical therapy.

What this says about long-term health

Not established by this trial.

Sources

Dietary interventions in Crohn’s disease

How strong the evidence is
Limited / emerging
What kind of study it is
Systematic reviews of controlled dietary intervention studies

What the study found

Systematic reviews find some promising results for Mediterranean-style and Crohn’s disease exclusion diets in mild-to-moderate Crohn’s disease, but certainty is limited by small studies, heterogeneous interventions, and moderate-to-high risk of bias.

Limitations

  • Evidence is insufficient to recommend one universal therapeutic diet.
  • Clinical symptom improvement should not be equated with endoscopic healing.
  • Do not claim dietary therapy cures Crohn’s disease or replaces medication.

What this says about long-term health

Not established.
