What the evidence says

Each summary sticks to what the cited source studied and found.

Moderate / mixed
What kind of study it is
Systematic reviews/meta-analyses

What the study found

Meta-analyses associate Mediterranean dietary patterns with improvements in several metabolic-syndrome components, including waist circumference, triglycerides, glucose, insulin resistance, and blood pressure.

Limitations

  • Recent review rated overall certainty very low because of heterogeneity.
  • Individual components and populations vary substantially.
  • Do not claim the Mediterranean diet cures or permanently reverses metabolic syndrome.
  • Do not generalize improvement in individual biomarkers to reduction in long-term clinical events without separate evidence.

DASH and Mediterranean patterns with sodium restriction

How strong the evidence is
Moderate
What kind of study it is
Randomized controlled trial secondary analysis

What the study found

In a randomized trial of adults with high-normal blood pressure or grade 1 hypertension, DASH plus sodium restriction and Mediterranean diet plus sodium restriction reduced the odds of meeting metabolic-syndrome criteria compared with minimal intervention over three months. Several cardiometabolic markers also improved.

Limitations

  • Participants had high-normal blood pressure or grade 1 hypertension, so findings should not be generalized to all populations.
  • Intervention lasted three months.
  • Sodium restriction was part of both dietary interventions.
  • Do not claim either dietary pattern permanently reverses metabolic syndrome.
  • Do not infer long-term cardiovascular event reduction from this trial.
